This matchbox holder is attributed to 12/3680 Private George Hingston who served during WWI embarking for Suez, Egypt on 16 January 1916 with the 9th Reinforcements, Auckland Infantry Battalion. The item is engraved with the words ‘Souvenir de la Somme‘ with the initials ‘G.H‘ on the alternate side. Private Hingston’s personal details can also be found inscribed along the spine.
