National Army Museum Seismic Update: Museum fully open!

19 December 2024

We are happy to say that, after a detailed risk assessment and in consultation with engineers and relevant subject matter experts, we have the confidence to re-open the part of the Museum that was closed.

In September 2024, a seismic assessment revealed an area of the Museum fell below the new building standards, which led to that area being deemed an earthquake-prone building. As a precaution, and to allow time for the Museum and its engineers to identify remedial solutions and conduct a risk assessment, we decided to close that section of the Museum, which contained our WWI and WWII galleries.

Although longer-term solutions are still being worked on with regards to the earthquake prone section of the building, we are thrilled to be able to fully re-open the Museum in time for the summer holidays. We are incredibly thankful for your patience and support these last couple of months while we worked through what needed to be done to get to this point. We look forward to once again sharing with you the full history of Ngāti Tūmatauenga the New Zealand Army.
