When Japan entered World War II and began a rapid advance through South East Asia and across the Pacific in early 1942, the New Zealand Government realised that this was the most serious military threat the country had ever faced.
To isolate and neutralise Australia and New Zealand, the Japanese seized island bases to cut off communications with the United States forces, and they soon invaded the Solomon Islands.
The New Zealand Government was convinced that our ground forces should take an active part in the war against Japan and decided to raise 3 New Zealand (NZ) Division. The 'force' underwent months of intensive training in jungle warfare and amphibious operations, however the shortage of manpower meant the 'Kiwis' could only assist the Americans rather than replace them.
Although New Zealand sent a small force to the Pacific, they were highly regarded by the United States armed forces, and the units from all three NZ services engaged in the campaign, won high praise for the professional and capable way they performed their duties, and in doing so, wrote a proud page in New Zealand's military history.
