Tears on Greenstone — Roimata Pounamu
“We will remember them…”
The Greenstone Wall is a unique interpretation of the New Zealand Roll of Honour. It commemorates the sacrifice of more than 30,000 men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Merchant Marine in the service of their country.
The Greenstone Wall features an audio-visual system which continuously intones the names and service details of our war dead.
The extreme youth of many of the fallen — illustrating a vast and tragic loss of individual and collective potential — is one of the most striking features of the wall.
This memorial is also a place where new Army recruits and cadets take part in an attestation when they are sworn into the Army. The falling water, a fountain on the wall, connotes tears of mourning for those deceased. It is significant for these new soldiers to commit and represents those gone before them.

The National Army Museum’s memorial database holds the names of all armed services personnel, including Merchant Navy, who were killed while on active service.
Now you can have their image displayed with honour on our new Memorial Wall. All we require is their name and service details and a suitable photo or digital image. There is a charge of $50 which includes the production of the image and your own certificate of remembrance. Original photographs will be returned.
Certificates only are available at a cost of $10 each including postage.
