Tears on Greenstone — Roimata Pounamu

"We will remember them...."

Tears on GreenstoneThe Greenstone Wall is a unique interpretation of the New Zealand Roll of Honour. It commemorates the sacrifice of more than 30,000 men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Merchant Marine in the service of their country.

The Greenstone Wall features an audio-visual system which continuously intones the names and service details of our war dead.

The extreme youth of many of the fallen — illustrating a vast and tragic loss of individual and collective potential — is one of the most striking features of the wall.

This memorial is also a place where new Army recruits and cadets take part in an attestation when they are sworn into the Army. The falling water, a fountain on the wall, connotes tears of mourning for those deceased. It is significant for these new soldiers to commit and represents those gone before them.

Visitors may call up details of relatives on the accompanying computer database, and special printed Memorial Certificates can be purchased from the Kippenberger Library at a cost of $10.00 (includes postage).
