During the Boer War in South Africa, New Zealand sent over 6000 men and over 8000 horses to help fight. After the war only one horse was brought back to New Zealand. The horse was called Major. The Museum's horse is Gus, he was a farm horse from the Turangi area who was donated to the Museum by his owner after Gus became ill with arthritis. His preserved skin has been stretched over a fibreglass model of the horse's body. This work was done by a taxidermist.
