1.5 Million Buttons Needed

Mariah College needs 1.5 million buttons to build a Holocaust button memorial sculpture.
The button maze will represent confusion and panic, the walls will be filled with the 1.5 million buttons, one button for every child murdered in the Holocaust. The centre will be lit by a candle surrounded by the words of a Holocaust survivor.
“In a time like the Holocaust its like living in a pitch black room, but everytime someone does something for you its like someone coming in and lighting a candle. you need to focus on the light”.
The National Army Museum will be supplying a button container in the “Anne Frank” exhibition. We invite everyone who visits us to bring any spare buttons they have to put in the container. These buttons will be forwarded to Moriah College to help them acheive building this fitting memorial for many children lost in the Holocaust.

NZSAS Exhibit Now open at the National Army Museum

Special or Elite forces always conjure up an air of intrigue and mystery combined with an effective ruthlessness that usually results in getting the job done.
The NZSAS ‘In The Pursuit of Excellence’ exhibit now open in the Hassett Gallery at the National Army Museum. This new exhibition unveils some of the secrecy that surrounds the New Zealand Special Air Service and provides insight into what it is like to be part of this specialist team.

New Zealand SAS at the Army Museum

Since its formation in the mid 1950s, the New Zealand Special Air Service has seen active service in Malaya, Borneo, South Vietnam, East Timor and Afghanistan, where, without exception, the Unit has served with distinction.
Like other Special Force units, the NZSAS’s mission is to respond to those grim situations where other Army units may not be able to act as effectively or efficiently. The role of the NZSAS therefore requires an extraordinary high degree of intense training following a vigorous and rigorous selection process. Their military operations require the same high degree of cunning, guise and operational flexibility.
Despite what many may think, our Special Force soldiers are not “super soldiers” – rather they are hand-picked volunteers who train long and hard and live and operate by their motto “Who Dares Wins” and follow their ode (James Elroy Flecker – “The Golden Road to Samarkand” [1913]):
“The Master of the Caravan said:
But who are ye in rags and rotten shoes,
You – dirty bearded, blocking the way?
The Pilgrim answered:
We are the Pilgrims, Master; we shall go
Always a little further: it may be
Beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow,
Across that angry or that glimmering sea,
White on a throne or guarded in a cave
There lives a prophet who can understand
Why men were born: but surely we are brave,
Who take the Golden Road to Samarkand”.

Now you can add their image to our new Tears on Greenstone Memorial Wall.
All we require is their name and service details, and a suitable photo or digital image. We will produce the wall image and return your original photographs. There is a charge of $50 which covers production of the wall image and your own certificate of remembrance. Please allow approx one month for your image to be installed.

Anne Frank Exhibition

National Army Museum are pleased to announce an Anne Frank exhibition, all the way from Amsterdam, will be showing at the National Army Museum, Waiouru, NZ from 4th August – 3rd November 2010 .

This touring exhibition from the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam has travelled extensively throughout the world.
The exhibition, which provides a chronology of events from the rise of Nazi Germany in 1933 through to the persecution of Jews as part of Hitler’s final solution is both thought-provoking and shocking, and will impact on all generations who visit this exhibition at the National Army Museum.
The exhibition will include some artefacts from the museum’s collection as well as a recently produced documentary.
